Flo Gaertner
(1971) studied Visual Communication and Exhibition Design at the HFG Pforzheim, Germany. From 1999 to 2006, he studied Art and Science of Art at Hochschule fŸr Gestaltung Karlsruhe, and at Hochschule fŸr bildende KŸnste Hamburg, Germany. He has been working as a freelancer for architecture offices and graphic design bureaus in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Stuttgart, and time and again for Finest/Magma, Karlsruhe, with Lars Harmsen. He joined Finest/Magma in 2006 as senior art director. Flo Gaertner is founder member of Volcano Type and Slanted (www.slanted.de and slanted magazine). His designs include 7 fonts so far. Numerous publications, awards and participations in exhibitions, amongst others at Kunstverein Hamburg, Museum fŸr Gegenwartskunst Siegen, StŠdtische Galerie in Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau, MŸnchen, and MuHKA Antwerpen.He lives and works in Hamburg and Karlsruhe.
Lars Harmsen
Lars Harmsen is one of three executives of the agency Finest/Magma Design & Communication in Karlsruhe. The focal point of his work is Creative Direction in the field of corporate and editorial design. He founded the font lable Volcano Type with Ulrich Weiss in 1996, which now distributes over 200 fonts. 2004 he brought the Webblog Slanted (www.slanted.de) into being. A Type-magazine with the same name has been published biannually since 2005. Harmsen is partner und Creative Director at the agency Starshot in Munich. With Starshot Lars Harmsen edits biannual the catalogue Useless, an independent sport and lifestyle magazine. In 2004 the photography and typography-book VERSUS – fts vs pix (Die Gestalten Verlag) was published. The book BASTARD – Choose my identity (Actar Barcelona) which examines cultural identity and the influence of globalism and web on culture and design, was created in 2006. Lars Harmsen has a university teaching position at the Hochschule fŸr Gestaltung in Karlsruhe and Pforzheim (2006). Moreover he is a sought after speaker at conferences (Face-to-Face/Stuttgart, Typo Berlin, InMotion/Hamburg, Heimatdesign/Essen).
Thierry Hausermann
Thierry Hausermann was born in 1965 in Miami. He followed one year at ESAA (école supérieure d'arts appliqués) in Vevey, Switzerland, than studied a 4 years graphic design program at ERACOM (école romande d'arts et communication) in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he graduate in 1986. Thierry also pursued a course of studies at the Academy of Arts of San Francisco for 1 year in 1997. In addition to the graphic designer piece, he is an editor, a project manager, a writer, and a secretary. Thierry's motivation is to discover new talent and explore the possibilities of presenting them in IDPURE. Always interested to find a Swiss magazine about graphic design with incredible printing processes. He couldn’t wait any longer…
Samir "Mr.Magazine"(TM) Husni, Ph.D.
Samir Husni, aka "Mr. Magazine"(TM), is the Chair of the Journalism Department at the University of Mississippi. He is also Professor and Hederman Lecturer of Journalism.
Dr. Husni is the author of the annual Samir Husni's Guide to New Magazines, which is now in its 21st year. He is also the author of Launch Your Own Magazine: A Guide for Succeeding in Today's Marketplace published by Hamblett House, Inc. and Selling Content: The Step-by-Step Art of Packaging Your Own Magazine, published by Kendall Hunt.
He has presented seminars on trends in American magazines to the editorial, advertising and sales staff of the magazine groups of the Morris Communications Company, Hearst Corp., Hachette Filipacchi Magazines, Meredith Corp., Reader's Digest Magazine, ESPN the magazine, Sail Magazine, American Airlines Publishing, the National Geographic Society, the Swedish magazine group Bonnier, the Finnish magazine group Sanoma Magazines, Southern Progress magazines, New South Publishing, Inc., the Society of Professional Journalists, the American Society of Magazine Editors, Vance Publishing Corporation, the Florida Magazine Association, The Magazine Association of Georgia, the National Society of Black Journalists, the Japanese Magazine Publishers Association, and the American Press Institute.
He is "the country's leading magazine expert," according to Forbes ASAP magazine, "the nation's leading authority on new magazines," according to min:media industry newsletter; and The Chicago Tribune dubbed him "the planet's leading expert on new magazines."
Dr. Husni has been interviewed by major U.S. media on subjects related to the magazine industry. He has been profiled and is regularly quoted in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, USA Today, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and many other newspapers nationwide, as well as the major newsweeklies and a host of trade publications. He has appeared on Good Morning America, CNBC, CNN, CNNFN, PBS, and on numerous radio talk shows including National Public Radio's Morning and Weekend Editions.
Dr. Husni has also served as an expert witness in several lawsuits involving major media corporations including Time Inc. and American Express Publishing among others. He has been a judge of The National Magazines Awards, The Evangelical Magazines Association, The City and Regional Magazines Association, and The Florida and Georgia Magazine Association Awards. Dr. Husni is the President and CEO of Magazine Consulting & Research, a firm specializing in new magazine launches, repositioning of established magazines, and packaging publications for better sales and presentations.
Dr. Husni holds a doctorate in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a master's degree in journalism from the University of North Texas. When he is not in his office reading magazines, Dr. Husni is at the newsstands buying magazines.
Mike Koedinger
Mike Koedinger: Luxembourg’s leading independent publisher is running a publishing media group producing magazines, guides and events for Luxembourg. His team of 25 dedicated full time professionals produces seven publications and over 5,000 pages a year. Magazine maniac since the eighties, Koedinger is the initiator, producer and co-curator of Colophon 2007, as well as the publisher of the book “We Love Magazines”. In april 2007, he will launch “NICO intervews & fashion”, his first international magazine.
Jeremy Leslie
Jeremy Leslie is Group Creative Director at the UK’s leading publishing agency, John Brown, where he oversees 40 designers producing over 50 publications for leading brands ranging from Virgin to NatWest and Orange to John Lewis. Previously he has art directed the early style title Blitz magazine, the London edition of Time Out and ran his own design studio.
Leslie regularly contributes to the creative press and design conferences on the subject of magazine design. He has won many design awards, including a D&AD Yellow Pencil for his art direction of M-real magazine, and has written two books about magazine design, ‘Issues’ (2000) and ‘magCulture’ (2003). Andrew Losowsky
Andrew Losowsky is a British writer and editor based in Spain. He is the editorial director of le cool, an international publishing company that provides knowledge for better living, and is a member of the International Association of Obituary Writers. He also edits the award-winning Galerie Papers magazine and has written for publications around the world, including The Guardian, The Times and Grafik. Since 1996, he has lived in London, Barcelona and Hong Kong. He currently lives in Madrid, and is working on a book about doorbells.
Luis Mendo
Born in Salamanca, Spain, in 1969. Luis Mendo has been a designer and Art Director for 13 years, most of them in The Netherlands. While in Spain, he designed newspapers and magazines for Argentina, Uruguay and Greece. In Holland worked 7 years for Lava, where he was a Creative Director and designed dozens magazines for huge and small companies. In june 2005 opened his own studio: GOOD Inc.
He regularly gives lectures, advice and workshops on design, magazine-making and creativity issues.
Horst Moser
Horst Moser, studied Grafic-Design in NŸrnberg, art and art-history in Munich (Akademie der Bildenden KŸnste). since 1984 magazine-Art Director. 1994 founded the Designstudio independent Medien-Design in Munich (Book- and magazine-design). many international awards, especially from the New Yorker society of publication designers. 2003 founded Primafila, a concept-bureau for Corporate Publishing in ZŸrich. Mosers book ›Surprise me‹ about Editorial Design was published in Germany, USA, England and China. David Renard
David Renard actively consults with established and independent publishers, wholesalers, and distributors on strategic planning, circulation, and marketing. He has also just authored The Last Magazine (published by Rizzoli), a visual anthology of the stylepress and a commentary on the future of printed periodicals. Before that Renard co-created Stare, a publishing and advertising agency, more than seven years ago, producing magazines that included Stare and Critic Eye. This led to the creation of Netcirculation, the largest nationwide distribution network for high-end boutique fashion, art, photography, and design titles. From 1994 to 1998, he worked at Gartner Group, the foremost provider of research and analysis on the global IT industry, advising executives and board directors of Fortune 500 companies regarding the impact of technological innovations on the financial industry, and spearheading a new European subsidiary that developed research-driven decision support tools.
Giovanni Riva
Giovanni Riva, was born in 1970 in Lausanne. He followed one year at ESAA (école supérieure d'arts appliqués) in Vevey, Switzerland, than studied a 4 years studding graphic design at ERACOM (école romande d'arts et communication) in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he graduate in 1992. Graphic designer and impassioned illustrator, Giovanni Riva was active since 1998 at Felimex in Morges, where he assumed the artistic direction of various national and international mandates. Previously, Riva spent ten years with watch industry, as well as food and various service sectors.
Recently Giovanni Riva joined and reinforces the creative team of B+G & Partners SA, in Montreux, as an Artistic Director. To ensure a new generation of talent, focused on innovation and experimentation in the trades of communication. In parallel, Giovanni Riva participates in the creative side of the magazine IDPURE
Boz Temple Morris
As co-founder and marketing director of DEATH Cigarettes Boz established huge awareness for the cigarette brand using creative collaborations with independent magazines and by creating brand power from word of mouth. His work has always championed independent and innovative thinking and has consistently challenged the status quo.
Today he is a consultant in branding and organizational development and is director of Holy Mountain, an arts organisation making work in various media.
Victor Zabrockis
Victor Zabrockis, Greek Brazilian creative director, for ten years being one of the contemporaries of the Brazilian internet boom and partner of one of the most successful design agencies in the country. After years running campaigns for nation wide fashion brands, Sao Paulo Fashion week and other international clients, he decided to move to Barcelona, were he is today partner of the upcoming Creative Consultancy firm Creative Hothouse (www.creativehothouse.com) Victor is also founder of vanguardist concept shop and pop art gallery MERCADO (www.mercadodelborne.com) in Barcelona, where artists like Gary Baseman, Megan Whitmarsh and others first show their work in the European territory.
Today, at 31 years of age, he also teaches at and holds the academic planning of Barcelona’s European Institute of Design’s (IED) Communication and Advertising Department.
